On Cape Breton Island’s beautiful west coast, Inverness was a boom town until the early 20th century before the closure of the coal mines led to great out-migration. The area of Atlantic Canada that I now call home is blessed with spectacular and varied coastline. From the steepling cliffs of Cape Chignecto and the Cabot Trail, to the endless red sand beaches of the Northumberland Shore, and the tree-lined coves around St Margaret’s Bay, Nova Scotia is truly a province that has been shaped by the water that surrounds it. Yet it is the coastal barrens, typified by granite outcroppings, which are synonymous with this part of the country. They offer endless opportunities for exploration - which is why it was a joy to play my part in helping the Nova Scotia Nature Trust to protect more of this unique habitat.
